To the parents looking to expand their family,
Hello! My name is Shealyn. I’ve got two kids of my own. When I was pregnant with my first, my doula and I talked about surrogacy. I had always distantly thought about it, but when I finally met someone who had done it I was even more interested. I thought it might be great for me because I loved being pregnant, but bonding with my babies didn’t really begin until a few weeks postpartum. It would be easy for me to give the baby to their true parents. Even so, my doula suggested that I wait to surrogate until after I was done having kids of my own. So, now that I’ve got my two (my youngest is about 17 months old now), I am ready to take the next step towards surrogacy!

I imagine that choosing the right surrogate would be a terrifying process. There are a few things that I want you to know that could help decide if I am the right one for your family:

1. I am vegetarian. I have been vegetarian for 25 years. I eat nutritionally balanced meals full of fruit, vegetables, and plant protein such as beans and tofu. When pregnant, I usually increase my protein intake to ensure that the baby has enough to grow! I also took iron and vitamin B supplements with my two, but in the future this will of course
depend on what the doctor suggests. Eating meat is NOT something that I would be willing to do while pregnant (or ever).

2. I do drink coffee. While pregnant, I limit coffee to one 12 oz. cup per day, and I cut out all other drinks except water. Unless specifically directed by the doctor to abstain from coffee, this is also something I would continue to do.

3. I have been unable to produce much breastmilk. The most I have ever been able to produce was a couple of ounces every 4-5 hours. It is not enough for a baby to drink and I have always had to supplement it with formula. After both pregnancies, my milk supply cut after 3 months. I will not be able to provide breast milk for your baby once they go home. If breastmilk is an important aspect for your family, I am not the right surrogate for you.

4. All other choices concerning your baby is up to YOU. If you want to join for the doctor’s visits and be present in the delivery room, I am happy to oblige! If not, I am happy to go by myself! If you want bump pictures sent every week, I’m happy to do so! If you want certain testing done (or not done) I am happy to do so! I am willing to work WITH you throughout the entire process so that you can be as involved as possible with every step.

Ultimately, having kids has been the absolute best decision for me personally; and while I have chosen not to have any more kids of my own, I would love the ability to bring that joy and happiness to another deserving family. I promise to respect the fact that your baby is YOUR baby, and that all decisions (except for items 1-3) concerning the baby will be your own, and I promise to keep your family as involved as you want to be. I promise to be open and honest about the process, with reliable and consistent communication. And finally, I promise that if we work together, that you will not regret your choice!
